General Responsibilities: The Director of Preservation Initiatives and Engagement is responsible for managing and directing Preservation Virginia’s advocacy and public policy program. The position supports the organization’s exploration of new approaches to preservation by engaging diverse communities and connecting historic sites and resources to today’s activities. The director will implement the comprehensive advocacy plan for the organization; related programming includes the Most Endangered Historic Places, Preservation Awards and educational seminars and conferences, and develop publications, action alerts and other written communications. The director manages a team of two professionals and works collaboratively with the marketing, development and museum operations team. The director works to raise awareness among developers, government officials, partner organizations and communities to find solutions that preserve history and allow for growth and development. . Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer in coordination with the Public Policy Committee.
Qualifications: This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of three years of experience in a related field. Master’s degree preferred, Demonstrated organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills and ability to work with and motivate other professionals and volunteers and an entrepreneurial spirit. Excellent verbal and written communications skills to speak effectively in small and large groups. Ability to read and interpret complex documents, such as public policy and legal preservation documents and to synthesize into understandable reports and communications. Ability to manage and coordinate statewide work. Travel is required.
