The program director coordinates and facilitates the activities of the local Main Street program. He or she is responsible for the development, conduct, execution, and documentation of the Main Street program. The director is the principal on-site staff person responsible for coordinating all program activities locally as well as representing the community regionally and nationally when required.

Should have 3-5 years experience in an events, community development role, as well as education and/or experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • architecture historic preservation
  • public relations
  • event planning
  • business administration
  • volunteer or nonprofit administration
  • small business development


The program director should also:

 Be sensitive to design and preservation issues; Understand issues affecting local business people, property owners, public agencies and community organizations; Be entrepreneurial, energetic, imaginative, well organized, and capable of functioning effectively in independent situations; Have excellent verbal and written communication skills; and Have good supervisory skills.
