The Chief of the Office of Preservation Services (OPS) assumes responsibility for all programs within the unit (which include rehabilitation tax credits, Section 106 / project review and compliance, easements, capital grants and loans, and underwater archeology), establishing strategic goals, objectives, and priorities in support of the agency's mission and in collaboration with MHT's other senior staff. The Chief will provide direction to staff of the unit, currently numbering 16, in matters of policy, precedent, procedure, law, regulation and standards, and will have a total command of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and their application. In addition, this position will supervise particularly complex, precedent-setting or sensitive projects. The Chief will provide direct technical assistance to constituents on a range of issues as well as educational outreach to the public and to preservation professionals. The Chief is expected to sustain productive professional relationships within the field and with state and federal partners. Additionally, the Chief of OPS will be an excellent ambassador for MHT and for historic preservation in Maryland. The Chief of OPS will have delegated authority as Deputy Director / Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer for programs within the unit.
