Position Description: Traditional Trades Apprentices assist park maintenance or preservation staff with building maintenance projects to preserve historic sites in the national park. These projects include general building maintenance; building stabilization; providing utility services; equipment maintenance. Projects will require the use of minor skills in carpentry, painting, plumbing, mechanical engineering, landscape and orchard maintenance. 

Specific Project Background and Objectives:

  • Anacapa Water Catchment Basin Repair: This project involves concrete repair and joint sealing at a historic water catchment basin that originally provided fresh water to the historic Light Station development on Anacapa Island, Channel Islands National Park.
  • Stone Masonry Wall Repair at Peter Strauss Ranch: This project involves stabilizing, reconstructing, and repairing mortared stone walls at a residential historic development at Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
  • Painting Historic Buildings: Depending on need, work may include painting historic wood buildings at Santa Monica Mountains and/or concrete buildings on Anacapa Island.
  • Light Station Stabilization: We may stabilize and repair a small light station on Santa Rosa Island, Channel Islands National Park.
  • Repair Timber Posts at Cabrillo Visitor Center: This project involves removing/replacing damaged sections of large timber posts that support the main Visitor Center building at Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego, California.
  • General Preservation Maintenance: This work may include roofing, siding repair, fence repair, etc. on historic resources at the three National Park units.
