Executive Director of Great Camp Sagamore, AKA Sagamore Institute of the Adirondacks, Inc, a National Historic Landmark and a leading educational, historical, and cultural organization in New York. Located in the heart of the Adirondack Park in the hamlet of Raquette Lake, NY on Sagamore Lake.
Great Camp Sagamore was built by William West Durant from 1895-1897 and then sold to Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt n 1901. After Vanderbilt died on the Lusitania in 1915, Margaret Emerson Vanderbilt ran the wilderness retreat, known as Sagamore Lodge, as a social gathering place until gifting it to Syracuse University in the 1950s.
In the 1970s, Syracuse University was about to sell it to New York State, in which case the State would have razed it or allowed it to fall into the ground because of the State constitution's 14th Amendment. To save Sagamore from destruction, two twenty-something cultural philanthropists bought the camp, creating Sagamore Institute of the Adirondacks. www.sagamore.org
Prior to joining Great Camp Sagamore, I was Director of Operations & Finance for ANCA (Adirondack North Country Association) the region's leading economic development organization located in Saranac Lake, NY and operating throughout the 14 counties of New York's North Country.
