Dear colleagues, Looking for great examples of awards presented to elected officials. Also, if you've toured elected officials through a historic place in your community, would love to know about your experience.

    Thanks much, Renee Kuhlman

    Renee,
I know you know about this award, but adding to this discussion for others!
At the Trust we give out the John H. Chafee Trustees' Award for Outstanding Achievement in Public Policy. Last year it was awarded to Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy at our annual conference (you can read more about Senator Cassidy in a press release that went out about the award).
The award honors an individual or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to historic preservation in the field of public policy at the federal, state, or local level over a sustained period of time. Past recipients for the John H. Chafee award have included Heritage Ohio, Texas Historical Commission, Representatives Michael Turner (R-OH) and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), Mrs. Laura W. Bush, and Mr. John Nau, III.
Our 2019 awards nominations period is now open--deadline is Feb. 1. We also present awards to individuals and organizations, as well as awards to those in the beginning phases of their careers (American Express Aspire Award) and those who have made an impact in the preservation field over time (Louise du Pont Crowninshield Award).
Working on the awards program at the Trust, I'm also interested to hear what other types of awards people are giving out in the preservation field!
    Thanks,
    Lizzy

Heritage Ohio gives hard hat tours of historic tax credit projects to elected officials. I am sure Joyce Barrett, the organization's Executive Director, would be happy to elaborate on this advocacy effort. Both local and state legislators are invited and I attended one in Dayton (seen below, the Mendelson Storage Building Project), as a Heritage Ohio board member. It was a wonderful opportunity to show how an old industrial building from the 1800s would transform into housing on the upper level and retail on the lower levels. Heritage Ohio partners with the developers in addition to having board members involved in the tour to ensure elected officials hear a variety of perspectives.

This fall during our Main Street Awards ceremony we recognized Senator Bill Cassidy with our Leadership Achievement Award for his leadership role in reviving the Historic Tax Credit in 2017. Recently we organized a tour of two buildings for Rep. Bradley Byrne. One building was under construction - going from a file storage operation to apartments, offices, and a brewery. The other building was recently occupied by an engineering firm that moved into downtown from outside of the city. The historic tax credit provided a crucial incentive to moving the building's renovation forward in both cases. We had taken Rep. Byrne on tours several years ago as well as the local staff liaisons for Alabama's two senators.

Milwaukee, the Wisconsin Historical Society, and the Wisconsin Alliance of Historic Preservation Commissions  all have awards programs that have an advocacy category. I don't know that a politician has ever won. It can be rather awkward to give such an award to someone before their retirement unless you can solidly say they spearheaded something very specific.

As for tours, I know elected officials have been through the Milwaukee Soldiers Home. The Lieutenant Governor has done press conferences in announcing grants for the project while on site.

    Renee,

Last year, Landmarks Illinois added a new category to their Richard H. Driehaus Preservation Awards for "Legislator of the Year." It was jointly awarded to the four State Representatives and Senators who were most involved in the passage of our state's first Historic Tax Credit (two of which were the retiring co-chairs of the state historic preservation caucus).

For more information, check out the link below. I am sure anyone from Landmarks would be willing to talk about the award and the work that they do with elected officials.

    Hope this helps!
