Hello Forum Connect and welcome to September 2021 (is anyone else listening to Earth, Wind, and Fire on repeat today?)!

I know that everyone has a lot on their plate right now so I wanted to take a moment and share a piece I published today by @Raina Regan on the Burnout Crisis in Historic Preservation. We know that everyone is dealing with much more than what is occurring in our professional lives (you know a pandemic, hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, geo-political upheaval, and the fact that children are heading back to school) and thought that this piece provides some perspective on what we need to do to safeguard our mental health at work so that we can deal with what is happening at home.

Speaking of natural disasters we went through and reviewed the links we had on our disaster recovery pages. While we are adding more material as we become aware of it, I wanted to share our pages with anyone who might need them. Make sure to also check out our resources on Preservation Leadership Forum and some quick  articles on SavingPlaces.org.

I hope that Forum Connect can serve as a place to ease some of that burden as you connect with colleagues and access resources for some of your most pressing concerns and questions. As always I'm here to help if you need support using the community.

Here is what happened last month on Preservation Leadership Forum and what's coming up:

I hope everyone has a safe and healthy month. Feel free to share your announcements below, and remember to abide by our code of conduct!

SAH Membership Grants for Emerging Professionals

    Purpose
SAH Membership Grants provide emerging scholars with a one-year digital SAH Individual membership to bridge the gap between the Society's subsidized student memberships and the full-cost SAH memberships. These awards are intended for emerging scholars, regardless of age or employment status, who are new to the field of architectural history or its related disciplines.
These grants are funded by the Society of Architectural Historians' Scott Opler Endowment for New Scholars.

    Award
The award consists of a one-year digital SAH Individual membership. SAH will recognize the award winners at the
SAH 2022 Annual International Conference in Pittsburgh and in the SAH Newsletter.

    Criteria for Application
These grants are intended to open membership in SAH to emerging scholars who are engaged in the study of architectural history and its related disciplines.

An emerging scholar for these purposes is defined as a person, regardless of age or employment status, who is new to the field of architectural history or its related disciplines and has received a terminal master's degree or PhD within the past five years (January 1, 2016–July 31, 2021).

Emerging scholars who are adjuncts or unemployed are encouraged to apply. The applicant may be either a new or renewing member of SAH. The intention of the award is to act as a bridge between SAH's current reduced-rate student memberships, which are subsidized by SAH, and the full cost of annual membership in SAH.

    Application Details
To apply, you will need to provide a current CV (2 pages max) and a brief statement explaining how the grant will help further your professional interests. The application deadline is September 30, 2021.

Stewardship for Climate Action Programming Announced!

Buildings account for 75% of greenhouse gas emissions in Washington, DC. There is no path to a carbon-free future without rapidly and comprehensively transforming DC's building sector. DCPL will conduct a series of six public programs exploring how building sector stewardship can best contribute to meeting DC's climate commitments. Three programs will be conducted in the fall of 2021, three more in the spring of 2022. Each program will be organized as a symposium, engaging subject experts, community representatives, and stakeholders.

Program 1 will be held on Wednesday, September 29th from 9-noon: offers baseline information on the building sector and urban infrastructure and its specific relevance to DC's climate action strategies.

Featured speakers include: Lisa Benton-Short, Prof of Geography and Program Director for Sustainability at George Washington University; Gregory Squires, Professor of Sociology and Public Policy & Public Administration at George Washington University; Sarah Vonesh, Director of Preservation Planning at EHT Traceries, and GIS Specialist Brian Kraft.

Programs are free and open to the public and will be offered in-person and online via zoom.
