I recently received a query from a local nonprofit interested in seeking National Register listing for a reconstructed lighthouse. It was rebuilt after being damaged beyond repair in a storm. The exterior is largely unaltered save being elevated on slightly higher piers.  The interior changes reflect its current use as a museum, not a working lighthouse (this change in use predates the reconstruction). The owners want to see the reconstructed lighthouse listed on the register, as was it's predecessor. I want to give them the best advice possible. Thanks for your help,

Hi Nathan,

The first questions to ask and answer are:

1. Does the property meet at least one of the four Criteria for Evaluation (A: Event; B: Person; C: Design/Construction; and/or D: Information Potential); and
2. Does the property possess sufficient integrity to convey its significance under the applicable criteria?

If the answer to both of these questions is yes, then evaluate whether or not the property meets the special requirements as stipulated for listing under Criteria Consideration E: Reconstructed Properties.

I'd recommend that the owner should contact the National Register coordinator at the Louisiana SHPO for guidance. States vary in how they evaluate and treat reconstructed properties, and it would be best to get feedback directly from the SHPO before moving forward with a nomination.

Nathan, What was helpful in listing the reconstructed St. Michael's Cathedral in Sitka, Alaska,  was the fact that the original was the subject of a HABS survey and the architect of the new building was able to justify modifications. After the original log cathedral burned down (along with half the town) nothing would do except to have a concrete replacement built -- clad in wide wooden boards to look like the original, which was also clad in wide boards. The building is now an illustration for the secretary's standards for guidelines for reconstruction. James
