Individual must have a background in horticulture and possess an interest in history.  Applicant must have the ability to work outdoors in a wide range of temperatures.  He or she must be able to walk up and down uneven stone stairs and lift 50 pounds.  The correct candidate will be expected to follow instructions well, work independently at times, yet be able to get along with other staff members and volunteers.


  • Help maintain garden and grounds in historic areas; tasks will include mowing, watering, edging, weeding, pruning, planting and mulching.
  • Assist with pest control, documentation, and record keeping.
  • Answer questions for visitors and staff; give tours of the garden to the public.
  • Prepare and exhibit the garden for weddings and special events as needed.
  • Assist the Head Gardener as needed.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

This is a part time, approximately 28-hour per week job that will require frequently working on weekends and some federal holidays.

About Oatlands Historic House and Gardens:  Oatlands is a 400-acre estate located in the Piedmont region of Virginia between Washington, D.C. and the Shenandoah Valley.  Once part of the extensive Carter family plantation holdings, Oatlands tells the stories of a 19th century working plantation, an early 20th century country house, and the people who lived and worked there.  Oatlands property includes four and ½ acres of magnificent formal terraced gardens, one of the earliest extant greenhouses in North America, barns, and other outbuildings.  Oatlands is owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and operated by Oatlands, Inc., both non-profit, non-government organizations.
